The concept of Respect is fairly hard to argue...

Here, please define what you regard as "Respect". To start the ball rolling, get wordweb, a free online dictionary which defines "Respect" as..

Respect:

  • The condition of being honored (esteemed or respected or well regarded)
  • An attitude of admiration or esteem
  • A courteous expression (by word or deed) of esteem or regard
  • Behavior intended to please your parents
  • A feeling of friendship and esteem
  • Courteous regard for people's feelings
  • Regard highly; think much of
  • Show respect towards

I think we can build on this. It's a very nice bare minimum defintion. What about the notion of respecting the space of another, be they animal, mineral or vegetable. For instance, the chicken. Maybe there's a tie in with battery hens and respect, or the lack there of. Just because we have the power to "battery" animals, doesn't mean to say that we can do so, and still maintain a knowledge of ourselves as "respectful". Some what doubled standards, perhaps?

Please comment....

P.S. The best thing about wordweb is that if you highlight a word in any program and press ctrl. Alt. W. together, you get the meaning of that word.
